Overview
Middlebury College was originally founded as Addison County Grammar School in 1797. It was chartered in November 1800 and currently offers over 40 majors in humanities, arts, literature, social sciences, natural sciences, and foreign languages. In addition to its core undergraduate programs, Middlebury holds summer graduate programs in English literature and modern languages. The college is distinguished for its international studies and perspective, modern language instruction, environmental studies and activism, and literary studies. At present, Middlebury College occupies a 350 acre campus in Champlain Valley. It has been ranked the fifth best liberal arts college in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
The fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho, was founded in Middlebury College’s Painter Hall in May 1905. In the early 1990s, the college abolished fraternities. However, the organization has continued to exist on the campus in a less ritualized form. The college’s athletic teams are called Panthers.
