Midlands Technical College, also known as MTC, traces its origin to the foundation of the Richland Technical Education Center, or Richland TEC, in 1963. The Richland-Lexington Counties Commission for Technical Education was formed in 1969, and the name of Richland TEC was changed to Midlands Technical Education Center. It merged with the Columbia Technical Education Center, which was established in 1947, and Palmer College in Columbia on March 21, 1973, and formed Midlands Technical College on July 1, 1974. The college is part of the South Carolina Technical College System. MTC is divided into the following academic departments:
- Department of Business Administration
- Department of Engineering Technology
- Department of Health Sciences
- Department of Industrial Technology

- Department of Public Service
MTC has a number of student clubs and organizations.
