Overview

Muhlenberg College is a private, liberal arts college which was initially established as the Allentown Seminary in 1848. Its founder was Reverend Samuel K. Brobst, a reformed Lutheran minister. It was named after Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, a patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Even though the college was historically affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, it maintains a religiously diverse student body.

The site where the present campus is located was purchased by the college in 1905. The campus spreads over an area of 81 acres. Programs offered by the college include an accelerated program, double major, cross-registration, independent study, internships, honors program, army ROTC (Off Campus), student-designed major, visiting/exchange student program, and teacher certification, in addition to associate and bachelor degrees. Four sororities are affiliated with the college. They are Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Chi Omega, Phi Mu, and Delta Zeta. The college's three fraternities are Delta Tau Delta, Phi Kappa Tau, and Sigma Phi Epsilon. In 2008, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Muhlenberg College at the 71st position among liberal arts colleges.
