New Mexico Highlands University

New Mexico Highlands University, also known as NMHU, was established in 1893. It was founded as the New Mexico Normal School. After a few name and status changes, it was finally christened New Mexico Highlands University in 1941. It is located at the center of Las Vegas. Along with the main campus, it also operates several centers in Farmington, Roswell, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Raton. NMHU offers several graduate and undergraduate programs. The university currently enrolls more than 3,500 students. Most of them are Native Americans or Hispanics. New Mexico Highlands University comprises of the following schools and colleges:

  • School of Education
  • School of Social Work

NMHU supports various student clubs and organizations such as American Chemical Society, Black Student Association, Delta Mu Delta, Ice Skating Club, Media Arts Club, and Omega Chi Sigma, among others.

Housing and Meals

New Mexico Highlands University provides on-campus housing for 553 of its 2,737 (full-time) students (as of 2008-2009).

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for major sports.

The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 129 male students received the aid (men were 65% of those receiving aid) and 70 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 35% of students receiving such aid) .
