Overview
Norfolk State University was established in 1935 as a black college. It was initially a part of Virginia Union University, but separated to form an independent identity as Norfolk Polytechnic College in 1942. The Virginia Legislature made it a part of Virginia State University in 1944. It was named Norfolk State College in 1969 and became Norfolk State University in 1979.
Norfolk State University is a state-supported, four-year, liberal arts institution which is spread over an area of 134 acres. It awards degrees in associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral programs through the following six colleges:

- College of Engineering, Science & Technology
- School of Social Work
- Office of Graduate Studies
The college has chapters of all nine organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. The college’s sports teams are known as Spartans.
