Overview

Northeastern University, also referred to as "NU" or "NEU," is a private research university in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts.

The university was initially established in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men. In 1922, it was re-christened the Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men's Christian Association and granted university status.

In 1935, the school was finally given its present name.

The University campus, including all of its schools and colleges, stretches over 67 acres of urban land.

NU's cooperative education program, one of the largest in the world, has been ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

With the school's proximity to major hospitals, health centers and pharmaceutical firms, Northeastern's researchers are exploring issues related to drug discovery and delivery; medical imaging; urban health; health care delivery; and rehabilitation medicine. NU's research has earned recognition from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency.

The campus is home to a number of fraternities and sororities, including Alpha Delta Phi, Kappa Sigma, Pi Delta Psi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Delta Phi Omega, and Sigma Sigma Sigma.

Athletic teams at the university are referred to as Husky. Northeastern, along with Harvard, hosted the 2006 NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, as well as the Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship at Franklin Park in 2003 and 2005.

NU's notable alumni include Jeff Clark, former executive vice president of Hewlett-Packard, CEO of Travelport; Shaun Fanning, founder, Napster; Audrey Daum, vice president, Merrill Lynch; Richard Egan, U.S. Ambassador; Lyndon LaRouche, perennial Presidential candidate; Donald Cheney, pioneer in genetic transformation of seaweed; Nat Hentoff, contributing editor, the New Yorker magazine; Jane Curtin, actor, founding member of "Saturday Night Live"; Carla Cook, jazz vocalist; Jim Fahey, National Hockey League, defenseman of New Jersey Devils; and Sean Jones, NFL, Green Bay Packers and other teams.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Colonial Athletic Association for major sports.
