Northwest Indian College was established in 1979 as the Lummi Indian School of Aquaculture. Commonly known as NWIC, the college is run by the Lummi tribe of Native Americans. Its name was changed to Lummi Community College in 1983, before becoming known by its current name in 1989. The college also operates branch campuses in Nespelem, Auburn, Tulalip, La Conner and Olympia.
NWIC offers programs leading to associate’s, bachelor’s and certificate degrees in areas such as native environmental science, Native American studies, early childhood education, chemical dependency and computer maintenance. The college also offers transfer degree and distance learning programs to its students.
NWIC sponsors basketball and track & field teams. The college also offers financial aid to deserving students in the form of federal, state and local scholarship programs.
