Northwest Missouri State University was initially founded in 1905 as a teachers college. It became Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in 1919. The name was changed to Northwest Missouri State College in 1949. This college was granted university status on August 14, 1972 and was given its current name at that time. The university offers enrollment to over 5,000 undergraduates and more than 1,000 graduate students every year.
