The University of Notre Dame du Lac, or simply Notre Dame, is an independent Roman Catholic, research university located in Notre Dame, Indiana, adjacent to the city of South Bend. It was founded in 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, CSC, of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Notre Dame gained the status of university in 1844. The campus is spread across 1,250 acres.

The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs. It is organized into the following academic divisions:

The Notre Dame Student body represents all 50 states and over 100 countries. The school's minority student population has doubled in the pst 20 years, and women, admitted for the first time to undergraduate studies in 1972, now account for 47 percent of enrollment.

There are several religious clubs on campus, including the Communion and Liberation of Notre Dame, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Jewish Club, and Muslim Student Association.

The university's Center for Social Concerns is a catalyst for student volunteerism. About 80 percent of students participate in voluntary community service.

The famous alumni of Notre Dame include Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State; Phil Donahue, talk show host; Mark Shields, political columnist and commentator; novelist Nicholas Sparks; James E.
