The University of Notre Dame du Lac, or simply Notre Dame, is an independent Roman Catholic, research university located in Notre Dame, Indiana, adjacent to the city of South Bend. It was founded in 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, CSC, of the Congregation of Holy Cross.
Notre Dame gained the status of university in 1844. The campus is spread across 1,250 acres.
The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs. It is organized into the following academic divisions:
- College of Arts and Letters
- College of Engineering
- Mendoza College of Business
- School of Architecture
- The Graduate School
- The Law School
Notre Dame's undergraduate program was ranked 18th among national universities by U.S. News & World Report for 2008-2009.
The Notre Dame Student body represents all 50 states and over 100 countries. The school's minority student population has doubled in the pst 20 years, and women, admitted for the first time to undergraduate studies in 1972, now account for 47 percent of enrollment.
There are several religious clubs on campus, including the Communion and Liberation of Notre Dame, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Jewish Club, and Muslim Student Association.
The university's Center for Social Concerns is a catalyst for student volunteerism. About 80 percent of students participate in voluntary community service.
The famous alumni of Notre Dame include Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State; Phil Donahue, talk show host; Mark Shields, political columnist and commentator; novelist Nicholas Sparks; James E. Muller, cofounder of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclewar War and co-recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize; Jim Andrews and John McMeel, cofounders of Universal Press Syndicate; Anne Heaton, folk musician; and Bruce Babbitt, former Governor of Arizona and U.S. Secretary of the Interior.
Notre Dame is strong in athletics. Some 400 students have gone on to play professional American football in the National Football League, American Football League, or the All-America Football Conference, including recent graduate Brady Quinn and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Montana. Additionally, Notre Dame had had 47 former students inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including football pioneer Knute Rockne.
