Overview
Ohio University, also known as Ohio, was established in 1804 as American Western University. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state and the first in the Northwest Territory.
In 1808, the university enrolled its first three students. In 1815, the first two students graduated with bachelor degrees.
The main campus of Ohio University covers more than 1,800 acres in Athens, Ohio.

The university ranks first in the state of for nationally competitive awards won by its students.
Ohio University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, as well as by a number of professional accrediting agencies.
The athletics teams of Ohio University are nicknamed the Bobcats. Hunter green and white are the university colors.
The men's and women's athletics teams compete at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in the NCAA Division I. The Bobcats are the winners of five MAC Football Championships and have also won a MAC East Division Championship.
There are more than 390 registered student organizations on campus, as well as 29 fraternities and sororities.
Ohio's notable alumni include Ruby Mercer, opera singer; Sammy Kaye, Big-Band leader; Lee Rich, film producer; Bill McCutcheon, Tony Award-winning actor (played Wally on "Sesame Street"); Jim Dine, pop artist, with work in Guggenheim Museum; Scott McPherson, playwright; June Kronholz, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for coverage of 9/11; Matt Lauer, "Today Show" anchor; James Jewell, U.S. Air Force surgeon who coordinated airlift of wounded on D-Day; Ariel C. Hollingshead, inventor of lung-cancer vaccine; Mike Schmidt, Philadelphia Phillies baseball player, Hall of Famer; and Daniel Carp, chair, president, CEO of Eastman Kodak.
