Overview
Oklahoma State University-Stillwater, also called OSU, is a coeducational, public research university located in Stillwater, Oklahoma-- approximately 60 miles from the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metropolitan areas.
OSU was founded in 1890 under the name Oklahoma Territorial Agricultural and Mechanical College. When the first students assembled for class on December 14, 1891, there were no buildings, no books, and no curriculum.
In 1907, the college was renamed Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1957, the College finally received its present name.
The main campus stretches over more than 1480 acres of urban land. Technical branches were established in Okmulgee in 1946 and in Oklahoma City in 1961. (In 1990 these branches were renamed OSU-Okmulgee and OSU-Oklahoma City.)
In July 1988, the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery became the College of Osteopathic Medicine of OSU.
The university has an enrollment of approximately 26,000 students on its four campuses.
