Overview

Philander Smith College, PSC, is a historically black college in Little Rock, Arkansas that was founded in 1877. The forerunner of PSC was Walden Seminary, which was named after Dr. J.M. Walden. The name of the institute was changed to Philander Smith College in 1882. PSC offers majors in general business administration, education, arts and humanities, natural and physical sciences, and social sciences among others.

The athletic department at Philander Smith College offers quality programs for men and women. They participate in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) organization. PSC has men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams.

Some of the notable graduates of the college are Elijah Pitts, former Green Bay Packers player; Lottie Shackelford, former mayor of Little Rock, Arkansas; and Joycelyn Elders, former Surgeon General of the United States.
