Overview

Saint Bonaventure University was established as an educational center in 1858 by the Franciscan Brothers. Nicholas Devereux, a Utica financier, played an influential role in its establishment. It became a university in 1950. At present, Saint Bonaventure University is the flagship Franciscan affiliated university. Its main campus occupies an area of 500 acre, and all the campus buildings have been designed in red brick with Italianate roofs. This design reflects the architecture of St. Francis' native country, Italy. Saint Bonaventure University offers over 50 academic programs including new courses in theater, arts, art history, and gerontology.

The university's sports team is called the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. They participate in the NCAA Division I. The university also owns a 9-hole golf course, restaurant, and cemetery. St. Bonaventure operates a second campus in Hamburg, Buffalo, where a few graduate classes are taught on a weekend and night schedule.
