Overview

Saint Joseph's University is a private, coeducational, Roman Catholic university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1851 as Saint Joseph's College by the Society of Jesus. It is one of the member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The institution is a liberal arts school steeped in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition. According to the school, the campus is compassionate and spiritual and includes a focus on the common good.

SJU enrolls more than 7,500 students each year. It offers more than 50 undergraduate majors, 8 special-study options, 25 study-abroad programs and 50 graduate study areas. The school reports that the curriculums combine the contemporary with the classical; inspired by the Jesuit tradition of serious inquiry. The campus consists of a little over 100 acres and over 70 buildings. SJU also offers online degree and certificate programs through its Saint Joseph's University Online extension.

U.S. News and World Report has ranked SJU in the top 10 among “Best Masters Universities in the North.” The school's Erivan K. Haub School of Business has been included in The Princeton Review's "The Best 290 Business Schools" list and in US News and World Report's top 25.

The school is organized into the following academic units:

  • College of Arts and Sciences – The college provides an introduction to a liberal education. The college includes humanities, natural sciences and social sciences divisions. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences provides service-learning opportunities and internships in the areas of social science and humanities.
  • Erivan K. Haub School of Business – The programs offer a foundation in business concepts and skills. The majors include specialized tracks which provide students the opportunity to focus on a distinct area of interest. The school also includes the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics and a Wall Street Trading Room.
  • Undergraduate Continuing Education – Provides the Jesuit mission of higher education which emphasizes self-improvement and service to others. The education combines secular and moral leadership by advocating personal transformation. According to the school, many of the adult enrollees are also seeking career training and seeking to enhance their skills.

The faculty consists of mostly full-time professors. According to the school, the teachers set demanding standards inside and outside the classroom.

Saint Joseph's University provides the students with a variety of social activities, college NCAA division 1 athletic teams and service-learning classes. The school offers a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. SJU has an active Greek life. More than five percent of men and 10 percent of women at SJU are members of a fraternity or sorority. It is also home to over 100 student organizations.

Regarding employment, career services members assist students in finding part-time and full-time jobs. Career fairs are available on and off campus.

Accreditation for SJU is from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
