Overview

Saint Louis University, or SLU, is a Jesuit Catholic research university with more than 13,000 students. Established in 1818 as Saint Louis Academy, it was the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States.

The Academy's name was changed to Saint Louis College in 1820. SLU enrolled its first African American student in 1944.

Presently, the college covers more than 240 acres in St. Louis, Missouri. A Madrid campus was established in 1967--the first freestanding campus operated by an American university in Europe.

SLU attracts students from more than 80 foreign countries and is the fourth largest Jesuit University in the country.

The 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report ranks SLU 88th out of the more than 260 national universities in the United States and among the top five Jesuit universities for the seventh consecutive year.

The Princeton Review's Best 368 Colleges guidebook for 2009 named SLU one of the top schools in the country for undergraduate education.

The university is organized into the following academic divisions:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Education and Public Service

  • Doisy College of Health Sciences

Some famous alumni of SLU are Christine Poon, Vice Chairman of Johnson & Johnson; Enrique Bola–os, President of Nicaragua; Gene Kranz, retired NASA Flight Director who served during the Gemini and Apollo programs; actor Robert Guillaume; William F.
