Saint Louis University-Main Campus

Saint Louis University, or SLU, is a Jesuit Catholic research university with more than 13,000 students. Established in 1818 as Saint Louis Academy, it was the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second oldest Jesuit university in the United States.

The Academy's name was changed to Saint Louis College in 1820. SLU enrolled its first African American student in 1944.

Presently, the college covers more than 240 acres in St. Louis, Missouri. A Madrid campus was established in 1967--the first freestanding campus operated by an American university in Europe.

SLU attracts students from more than 80 foreign countries and is the fourth largest Jesuit University in the country.

The 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report ranks SLU 88th out of the more than 260 national universities in the United States and among the top five Jesuit universities for the seventh consecutive year.

The Princeton Review's Best 368 Colleges guidebook for 2009 named SLU one of the top schools in the country for undergraduate education.

The university is organized into the following academic divisions:

SLU has more than 10 fraternities and approximately seven sororities. Some of these Greek Organizations are Alpha Delta Gamma, Delta Sigma Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Kappa Delta Rho, Alpha Delta Pi, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

Some famous alumni of SLU are Christine Poon, Vice Chairman of Johnson & Johnson; Enrique Bola–os, President of Nicaragua; Gene Kranz, retired NASA Flight Director who served during the Gemini and Apollo programs; actor Robert Guillaume; William F. Quinn, the first Governor of Hawaii; Brian McBride, the only American to score in more than one FIFA World Cup Tournament; and Sister Rose Thering, the Dominican nun who campaigned against anti-Semitism in Catholic textbooks.
