Overview

Sam Houston State University, also referred to as SHSU and Sam, is a public, coeducational university located in Huntsville, Texas. It was established on April 21, 1879, as Sam Houston Normal Institute. In 1923 the institution was renamed to Sam Houston State Teachers College. It 1965 it was renamed to Sam Houston State Colleg. Finally, in 1969, it was renamed to its present moniker.

Sam Houston State University has the following colleges:

The University's athletic teams are called the Sam Houston State Bearkats. The official mascot is a Bearkat. The University sponsors football, track and field, and basketball.
