The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, also known as SAIC, is located in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It was originally established as the Chicago Academy of Design in 1866. It was founded by a group of 35 artists. The first classes were held in 1868. However, the school went bankrupt in 1879, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, which was formed the same year, purchased all its assets at an auction. It adopted its present name in 1882. The campus of SAIC comprises of five buildings in Chicago.
Some of the student organizations of SAIC are the At Home World Wide Fashion Society, Korean Graduate Student Community, Performance Art Society, Photographic Graduate Committee on Visiting Artists, Veggies Unite!, and Belly Dancing Group. It also has a volunteer television station, called ExTV, which is run by the students, and a volunteer internet radio station.
Many students of SAIC have gone on to become famous. Some of them are Walt Disney, founder of Disney; Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy; and Victor Skrebneski, the famous fashion photographer.
