Southern Illinois University Carbondale, also referred to as SIUC or SIU, is located in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. The Carbondale campus is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system. It was founded in 1869. SIU ranks as one of the top public universities in Illinois. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has ranked SIU as the “Doctoral Research Extensive”. Undergrads are 80% of enrolled students, graduate students are 18%, and those seeking first-professional graduate degrees represent 3%. About 1% of freshmen are from countries other than the US. Students living in the US make up 99% of incoming freshmen. Among freshmen students, 99% are full-time and 1% are part-time.

Housing and MealsSouthern Illinois University Carbondale provides on-campus housing for 5,675 of its 16,027 (full-time) students (as of 2008-2009). The school requires freshmen to live on campus. Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.
AthleticsSchool sports include football (Division I-AA Independents), basketball (Missouri Valley Conference), baseball (Missouri Valley Conference), and track (Missouri Valley Conference). The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 184 male students received the aid (men were 63% of those receiving aid) and 107 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 37% of students receiving such aid) .
