Overview

Southern Illinois University Carbondale, also referred to as SIUC or SIU, is located in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. The Carbondale campus is the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University system. It was founded in 1869. SIU ranks as one of the top public universities in Illinois. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has ranked SIU as the “Doctoral Research Extensive”. The University offers various degree programs, from bachelor to doctoral level, through the following academic divisions:

Southern Illinois University Carbondale provides on-campus housing for 5,644 of its 15,917 (full-time) students (as of 2009-2010). The school requires freshmen to live on campus.

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.

Athletics

School sports include football (Division I-AA Independents), basketball (Missouri Valley Conference), baseball (Missouri Valley Conference), and track (Missouri Valley Conference).

The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 184 male students received the aid (men were 63% of those receiving aid) and 107 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 37% of students receiving such aid) .
