Overview

Southern Maine Community College, established in 1946, is situated in South Portland, Maine and is a part of the Maine Community College System. SMCC opened as a day college under the nickname of "Maine Vocational Technical Institute" in Augusta, Maine.

The campus covers an area of nearly 80 acres overlooking Casco Bay. It offers liberal studies programs and technical programs in several areas of study. The college is organized into the following academic divisions:

  • Applied Technology Division
  • Arts and Sciences Division
  • Health Sciences Division
  • Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, and Business Division
  • Public Safety Division

Southern Maine Community College hosts numerous recognized clubs and organizations including the Al-Kharizmi Math and Physics Club, the Multicultural & International Students’ Club, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the Art Club. Credit enrollment as of fall 2006 recorded roughly 70 international students.
