Overview

Southwestern Illinois College, also referred to as SWIC, is a coeducational, public, community junior college located in Belleville, Granite City, and Red Bud, Illinois, United States. It was established in 1946 as Belleville Junior College. In 1967 the name was changed, under a newly passed act, to Belleville Area College. On January 1, 2000, the College received its present moniker, Southwestern Illinois College.

The school has three main campus locations: in Belleville, established 1971; in Sam Wolf Granite City, opened 1983; and Red Bud, opened 1985. SWIC also reports that it has over 20 off-campus sites, most of which are located in district high schools but also include Scott Air Force Base and the East St. Louis Community College Center.

The student body of SWIC is cosmopolitan in nature with American Indian/Alaskan natives, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/Non-Hispanic, Hispanic, and White/Non-Hispanic all forming appreciable fractions of the student body.

SWIC athletic teams are called the Blue Storms. The official mascot is the Blue Storm. The College sponsors soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, and golf.
