Overview

Springfield College in Illinois (SLI), which is based in Springfield, Massachusetts, was established in 1885 as a department of the YMCA School of Christian Workers (Springfield). The department specialized in providing two year training to prepare young men for working as YMCA organizations' general secretaries. It was named International YMCA College in 1912 and Springfield College in 1954.

Springfield College in Illinois formed a partnership with Benedictine University in 2003 and now offers associate's, bachelor's, masters' and doctoral degree programs. It focuses on providing education in allied health sciences, arts and sciences, human and social services and sports movement activities. The college is famous as the "Birthplace of Basketball". The sport was created by James Naismith, an alumnus and faculty in 1891. The college is also the alma mater of the inventor of volleyball – William G. Morgan.
