Stanford University was established in 1885 by Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford. It was named after their only child, Leland Stanford, Jr., who died just before his 16th birthday. The main campus of the university encompasses more than 8,000 acres in Stanford, California. Stanford University is divided into the following academic units:

There are several fraternities and sororities at Stanford University. Some of these are Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Chi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Psi Zeta, and Sigma Theta Psi.
Stanford University has more than 160,000 living alumni. Some of the most notable alumni are Travis Flenniken, Chairman of Intel Corp.; Mohammad Reza Aref, first Vice President of Iran; and Jim Allchin, co-President of Microsoft.
