Overview

The State University of New York Plattsburgh was founded by Simon M. Weed, a Plattsburgh businessman and former state politician who campaigned tirelessly for the establishment of a Normal School or teachers college at Plattsburgh. The university started accepting students in 1890.

SUNY Plattsburgh is a four-year liberal arts college spread over an area of 256 acres. It offers over 60 baccalaureate degree programs accompanied by a wide range of minors, in the following three major divisions:

  • Arts and Sciences
  • Business, and Education
  • Health and Human Services

The college also offers graduate degrees in Psychology, Education, speech- liberal arts and language pathology. More than 90% of the students come from New York State. The college's athletic teams are called the Cardinals.
