Overview

Tarleton State University, also referred to as TSU or Tarleton, is a public, coeducational, state university located in Stephenville, Texas, United States. The university was founded in 1899 as a private, liberal arts college known as John Tarleton College. It became a member of The Texas A&M University System in 1917. In 1973, it gained university status and its present moniker. The University today stretches over approximately 1900 acres of urban land.

The men's and women's sports teams of TSU are known as the Texans and TexAnns respectively. The official mascot is the Plowboys. The University sponsors football, basketball, volleyball, track and field, softball, and cross country.

Notable alumni of TSU include George Kennedy, actor; Dave Mitchell, Dallas radio personality; Chad Fox, MLB player with the Chicago Cubs; Millie Hughes-Fulford, chemist and NASA astronaut; and Sam M. Russell, U.S. Representative serving 1941-1947.
