Overview

Texas A&M University, or TAMU, is a coeducational public research university in College Station, Texas. It was founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the state's first public institution of higher learning. In 1963, the school was renamed Texas A&M University by the Texas Legislature.

Situated on a 5,000-acre campus, Texas A&M University is one of a select few universities with land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant designations. TAMU has two branch campuses, one in Galveston, Texas, and one in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar.

The university was recently ranked first in the nation by The Washington Monthly for "tangible contributions to the public interest." U.S. News & World Report of 2009 ranked Texas A&M third nationally as a "best value" among public universities and 64th among national universities. Many degree programs are ranked among the top 10 in the country.

The university has an active campus life, with more than 800 student organizations. Texas A&M's almost 650 student-athletes compete at the NCAA Division 1-A level in 20 varsity sports. Since the beginning of the Big 12 Conference in 1996, Texas A&M has won 20 Big 12 titles in various men's and women's sports. The recreational sports program includes 30 student sport clubs and one of the largest intramural programs in the nation.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Big Twelve Conference for major sports.

The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 237 male students received the aid (men were 52% of those receiving aid) and 218 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 48% of students receiving such aid) .
