Overview

Texas A&M University at Galveston was established in 1962 as a marine laboratory and the home of Texas Maritime Academy. Its first training ship, the Texas Clipper, was donated by the federal government in 1965. The campus was expanded in 1968 due to the donation of a 100-acre plot on Pelican Island by George P. Mitchell. There was another land donation of 35-acres in 1993, and an additional 14 acres at Teichman Road for housing the sailing and rowing teams. Texas A&M at Galveston has since been focused on maritime fields of study in biology, engineering, and administration.

At present Texas A&M University at Galveston offers courses in marine biology, marine engineering technology, marine fisheries, marine transportation, marine sciences, maritime studies, maritime administration, maritime systems engineering, university studies (involving marine environmental law and policy), and oceans and coastal resources. It also awards a two-year master degree in Marine Resources Management. Hands-on training is provided to the Texas Maritime Academy cadets on board the TS Texas Clipper III. All degrees are awarded by the Texas A&M University at College Station.
