Texas A & M University-Commerce

Texas A&M University–Commerce, also referred to as TAMU-C, is a coeducational, public college located in Commerce, Texas. It is a member of the Texas A&M University System. It was established in 1889 as East Texas Normal College. The State of Texas purchased the campus from the original founder, William Leonidas Mayo, in 1917 and renamed it East Texas State Normal College. In 1923, the College was renamed again to East Texas State Teachers College. In 1957, the name was changed to East Texas State College. In 1962, the name of the College was changed to East Texas State UIniversity, and the institution was granted University status. In 1996, the University entered the Texas A&M University System and underwent its final name change to Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Texas A&M University–Commerce is organized into the following colleges:

TAMU-C's campus is home to a number of Greek-letter fraternities and sororities including Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Phi Beta.

The men's and women's sports teams of TAMU-C are called the Lions and Lady Lions respectively. The official mascot of TAMU-C is the Lion. The University sponsors basketball, cross country, football, golf, track and field, soccer, and volleyball.

Notable alumni of TAMU-C include Mark Seliger, former chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine; Sally Kern, Oklahoma legislator; Duane Allen, member of the music group The Oak Ridge Boys; and Gary Panter, Award-winning illustrator, painter and designer.

Housing and Meals

Texas A&M Commerce provides on-campus housing for 1,910 of its 6,357 (full-time) students (as of 2007). The school requires freshmen to live on campus.

Students may purchase a meal plan which includes 19 meals weekly.

Texas A&M Commerce Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. Texas A&M Commerce is in the Lone Star Conference for major sports.
