Overview

Texas Southern University, also referred to as TSU, was founded on March 3, 1947, as Texas State University for Negroes. Later on, it was named Houston College for Negroes and was part of the Houston Independent School District. Presently, the university is one of the largest historically black universities in the United States. TSU covers approximately 150 acres in Houston, Texas. The academic units of TSU are organized into the following schools and colleges:

TSU has an active Greek life. Some of the fraternities and sororities of the university are Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Eta Rho, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Gamma Phi Delta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and Kappa Kappa Psi. There are also several student organizations at TSU including the Association of Black Journalists, Bilingual Education Association, Economics Students Association, International Students Organization, Tigers for Christ, and many more.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for major sports.

The school offers financial aid for athletes. Of students receiving athletic financial aid, 144 male students received the aid (men were 56% of those receiving aid) and 115 women were awarded financial aid based on athletics (representing 44% of students receiving such aid) .
