Overview

The University of Alabama, a coeducational university in Tuscaloosa, has consistently been ranked among the nation's top 50 public universities by U.S. News and World Report . The school has had a number of USA Today Academic All-Americans in its student body.

Founded in 1831, UA, or "Alabama," as it is also known, is the flagship university of the University of Alabama System and its oldest and largest member. The university offers more than 200 fields of study in several academic divisions, leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

UA is known for its diverse athletic teams, collectively called Crimson Tide. The school has won many NCAA championships and is a major force in NCAA sports.

Honoring the memory of Paul William "Bear" Bryant, UA's legendary coach, is a museum named for him on campus. Considered the "winningest coach" in the history of college football, Bryant was national coach of the year three times, SEC coach of the year eight times, and coached six national championship teams.

Distinguished alumni include author-journalist Gay Talese; Mel Allen, the voice of the Yankees; former Postmaster General Winton Blount; Broadway actor Norbert Leo Butz; Hugo Black, the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice; Richard Shelby, current U.S. Senator from Alabama; John Cochran, ABC news reporter; and Joe Namath, football quarterback for the New York Jets. Harper Lee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of To Kill a Mockingbird, attended the school but did not graduate.

UA's main campus extends across 1,000 acres and is noted for its Greek Revival architectural style. The university recognizes more 45 social Greek letter organizations. There are also several unofficial fraternities and sororities, whose chapters are governed by the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Association, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Southeastern Conference for major sports.
