Overview
The University of Tennessee, or UT, is located in Knoxville, Tennessee. It is a co-educational, public, research-extensive university established in 1794 as Blount College.
In 1807, the school was renamed East Tennessee College. It was subsequently raised to university status in 1840 and renamed East Tennessee University. In 1879, the university received its current name.
UT Knoxville, a land-grant university since 1869, is part of the University of Tennessee System, a statewide institution governed by a 26-member Board of Trustees appointed by the governor of Tennessee.
The main Knoxville campus stretches over 550 miles. There also four other campuses--Memphis, Martin, Tullahoma, and Chattanooga.
The main part of UT's old campus, named "The Hill," still stands on a rising bank above the north shore of the Tennessee River.
U.S. News and World Report ranked UT Knoxville as No. 52 among all public universities and No. 106 among all national universities for 2010. The national universities group includes 262 American universities that offer the comprehensive bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
The magazine also ranked UT graduate programs among the best in the nation for 2010--with the supply chain management and logistics program ranked ninth among all national universities. The College of Law's clinical training program is 15th nationally, and the College of Engineering's graduate program in nuclear engineering is ranked 12t.
The student population of the University of Tennessee is greatly diversified. The university is also home to over 30 fraternities and sororities.
The sports teams of the University of Tennessee are known as the Volunteers, and the official mascot is a Bluetick Coonhound named Smokey IX. the University of Tennessee fields twenty men's and women's varsity intercollegiate teams and is home to more than 500 student-athletes. The Vols and Lady Vols compete as members of the Southeastern Conference
Among UT's famous alumni are Howard Baker, Jr., former Minority and Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient; Samuel E. Beall, III, founder of Ruby Tuesday restaurants; Deanna Kay Carter, Country singer; John Cullum, Tony Award-winning actor; Mark Dean, developed the technology that launched the PC; Phillip Fulmer, head coach of Tennessee Volunteers football team; Henry Hartsfield, Jr., NASA astronaut; Todd Helton, two-time All-American baseball player; Joseph Wood Krutch, drama critic, author; John T. Majors, football All-American; Cormac McCarthy, novelist; Dave Ramsey, host of nationally syndicated show; Margaret Scobey, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt; Ann Tanner Taylor, newscaster for National Public Radio; and John Noble Wilford, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, science correspondent for the New York Times.
