Overview

The University of Texas at El Paso was established on September 23, 1914, as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy. The university is also referred as UTEP. The name of the university was changed to Texas Western College of the University of Texas, or TWC, on September 10, 1949. UTEP adopted its current name in 1967. Presently, the university offers more than 80 bachelor degrees and approximately 70 master degrees. UTEP is divided into a number of academic units, including:

The sports teams of UTEP are popularly known as the Miners. The university competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.

Some of the most notable alumni of UTEP are Bob O'Rear, one of the founders of Microsoft; Bob Beamon, Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in track and field; and Hank Cohen, president of MGM Television Entertainment.

Athletics

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Conference USA for major sports.
