Overview
Tulane University is an independent educational and research university in New Orleans, Louisiana's cultural capital.
The institution was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana, which merged in 1847 with the University of Louisiana. In 1884, the state Legislature authorized a fund to reorganize the university as a private institution and rename it Tulane University of Louisiana.
Tulane is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of 62 universities with pre-eminent programs of graduate and professional education and scholarly research. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Research in many disciplines takes place through in many centers, including the Tulane Center for Gene Therapy. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching ranks Tulane as having "very high research activity".
Tulane was named by Kaplan/Newsweek's college guide as one of the 25 "Hot Schools" in the nation in 2008. It has been ranked 50th among the best national universities by U.S. News & world Report, and the A. B. Freeman School of Business was ranked fourth on its list of Top Graduate Programs for Entrepreneurs by Entrepreneur magazine.

Tulane's 110-acre uptown campus houses the majority of its schools and colleges. There are also centers or satellite campuses near Belle Chasse and in Covington, LLa.; Biloxi, Miss; and Houston.
Tulane's athletic teams are the Green Waves. The university participates in the NCAA Division I-Bowl and is a member of Conference USA.
Among Tulane University's notable alumni are Howard Baaker, former U.S. Senate Majority Leader; Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans; Scott Cowen, the university's President; Amy Carter, children's book author (and daughter of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter); Michael E. DeBakey, cardiac surgeon and pioneer; Jerry Springer, talk show host and former Mayor of Cincinnatti; Lauren Hutton, model; actor Paul Michael Glaser; and Nicole Cooley, Walt Whitman Award-winning poet. Fashion designer Geoffrey Beene studied mediccine at Tulane but did not graduate.
