Overview

University of Alaska Anchorage, or UAA, is the largest member of the University of Alaska System, with more than 17,000 students. The university is located in Anchorage, the state's largest city, and community campuses in Southcentral Alaska.

The university dates back to 1954, when the Anchorage Community College opened. Anchorage Senior College began providing upper-division classes in 1969, becoming the four-year, degree-granting University of Alaska in 1976.

U.S. News and World Report (2008 edition) ranked UAA in the third tier for master-granting institutions in the Western United States. The university offers a wide variety of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study, including a rapidly growing department in aviation and aviation technology.

In addition to its academic degree programs, UAA offers vocational and professional certificates in more than 150 major study areas, including arts, business, education, human services and health sciences.

One focus of the university is Native Student Services, which aims to provide quality support services to Native and rural students to promote their scholastic achievement, student retention and personal success.

UAA also attracts many nontraditional (40+ year-olds) and part-time students.

Study abroad programs take place in Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand. The National Student Exchange has semester- and year-long exchanges with nearly 200 participating universities throughout the United States and Canada, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. virgin Islands.

UAA, whose teams are known as the Seawolves, sponsors 11 sports programs. The university is an NCAA Division I school for gymnastics and hockey and a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. UAA is also a Division II member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in men's and women's basketball, volleyball, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

UAA also hosts the nationally known Great Alaska Shootout college basketball tournament every Thanksgiving. The Northern Light is the student-run newspaper. UAA has an active Greek life, with several fraternities and sororities.
