Overview

The University of Alaska Fairbanks, also known as Alaska, or UAF, is the flagship campus of the University of Alaska System. Located in Fairbanks, Alaska, the school was established in 1917 as Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines. It became the University of Alaska in 1935.

By the time Alaska became a state in 1959, students could earn Ph.D.s there. UAF remains the only campus in the state that awards doctoral degrees and is one of the few sea-, land- and space-grant schools in the country.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks attracts large numbers of nontraditional students as well as students from 52 foreign countries.

The University of Alaska Museum of the North is located on the Fairbanks campus. In addition, UAF has seven other rural and urban campuses spread throughout the state.

The university is organized into the following academic divisions:

  • Graduate School
  • The College of Engineering and Mines
  • The College of Liberal Arts
  • The College of Natural Science and Mathematics
  • The College of Rural and Community Development
  • The School of Education
  • The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences
  • The School of Management
  • The School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences

UAF is the principal research center for the statewide university system, emphasizing high-tech, high-latitude research in these major units:

  • agricultural and forestry experiment station
  • Arctic Region Supercomputing Center
  • Geophysical Institute
  • Institute of Arctic Biology
  • Institute of Marine Science
  • Institute of Northern Engineering
  • International Arctic Research Center

Among UAF's notable alumni are: Bill Stolz, member of the Alaska House of Representatives; Jamie Smith, cartoonist and comic-strip creator; Neil Brown, member of the Legislative Body of alberta Canada; Bob Bartletter, U.S. Senator from Alaska; Evelyn Bly, Miss Alaska 1960, also teacher and entrepreneur; T. Neil Davis, geophysicist and Professor Emeritus of university; David Crouse, short-story writer and teacher; and Nicholas Hughes, fisheries biologist, son of poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes.

UAF's sports teams are all known as "Nanooks," dervied from the Inupiaq Eskimo word for "polar bear." Athletics include men's and women's baseketball, swimming and volleyball, rifle, hockey and cross-country running and skiing teams.

The university is home to more than 100 active student organizations on campus--including student clubs, honor societies, campus clubs, and Greek Life organizations--and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Fetival.
