Overview
University of Arkansas, also known as U of A or UA, is the state's flagship university. A public, coeducational, state and land-grant university, it resides on 345 acres in Fayetteville, overlooking the Ozark Mountains.
U of A was established as Arkansas Industrial University in 1871 and took its present name in 1899.
Old Main, the university's signature building, is one of 11 campus buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places. Starting on Old Main's front step with the year 1876, the names of thousands of graduates have been chiseled into more than two miles of campus walkways.
U of A offers an array of degrees and programs in diverse areas of study. The university is organized into the following academic divisions:

The University of Arkansas Honors College was established and endowed in 2002.
Athletic teams are known as the Razorbacks. School sports include football, basketball, baseball and track, and U of A is in the Southeastern Conference for major sports.
Among U of A's many student organizations are film societies, information technology clubs, fraternities and sororities, debate teams, and a newspaper and literary magazine.
Former President Bill Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton started their careers as faculty members of U of A.
Notable alumni include J. Walter Keller, developer of the heart pacemaker; J. William Fulbright, former U.S. Senator, creator of the Fulbright Program for International Education Exchange and president of the university; Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys and member of the 1964 National Champion football team; Pat Summerall, professional football sportcaster for the Fox Network; Professor Emeritus E. Fay Jones, recipient of the American Institute of Architects' highest award, the Gold Medal; S. Robson Walton, chairman of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; Tommy Holloway, manager of NASA's space shuttle programs; and Joe Johnson, NBA guard for the Atlanta Hawks and Phoenix Suns.
