Overview

University of California, Riverside, also referred to as UCR or UC Riverside, is a coeducational, public, research university located in Riverside, California, United States. It was established in 1907 as the UC Citrus Experiment Station (CES). It was renamed to Riverside College in 1954 and finally raised to University status in 1959 with its present moniker.

UCR's student population is cosmopolitan in nature with Asian, Hispanic, American Indian, African American, and other ethnic races making up significant proportions of it. The campus is home to more than ten fraternities and sororities. Around 13% percent of undergraduates are members of Greek letter houses, but separate housing is not available for them.

The University's athletic teams are called the Highlanders. Scotty the Bear is the official mascot. The University sponsors soccer, cross country, basketball, track and field, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and volleyball. There are also various club sports offered to students who wish to participate.
