Overview

The University of California, Santa Barbara, was established in 1905 as an independent teachers' college. In 1944, it became part of the University of California system. The University of California is also referred as UC Santa Barbara or UCSB and is the third-oldest general-education campus of the University of California system. UCSB encompasses 989 acres of land in Santa Barbara, California, and has its own beach and lagoon.

The academic division of UCSB is organized into a number of schools and colleges, such as:
