Overview
The University of Central Florida, a member institution of the State University System of Florida, is located in Orlando. It was founded in 1963 as the Florida Technological University and was renamed the University of Central Florida in 1978.
The main campus sits on 1,415 acres, with 600 of those set aside for lakes, woods and an arboretum. In addition, there are 11 regional campuses.
More than 53,000 students attend the school, which was listed in "The 361 Best Colleges: 2006 Edition" by The Princeton Review.

University of Central Florida founded the Space Education and Research Center in 1990 and is a member of the NASA Space grant colleges group.
UCF has an 85,000 square foot Recreation and Wellness Center. A 10,000-seat Arena and a 45,000-seat football stadium were opened in 2007.
In 2007-08, the university's professors received $111.8 million in research funding, with contracts and grants coming from federal, state and industry partners.
UCF's famous alumni include John Bersia, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer; William N. Parsons, former director of NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center; Theresa Schefstad, founder and former president, CEO and director of Raymond James, Inc.; Allen Weiss, president of Worldwide Operations of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts; actors David Blue ("Ugly Betty") and Cheryl Hines; Jermaine Taylor, NBA shooting guard for Houston Rockets, 2009 Conference for USA Player of the Year; and Michelle Akers, soccer player named to FIFA Top 100.

Athletics
School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Conference USA for major sports.
