Overview

The University of Cincinnati, also known as UC, is a coeducational, public research university in Cincinnati, Ohio and the state's premier urban research university.

The roots of the school go back to 1819, when the Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio were chartered. In 1870, the City of Cincinnati established the University of Cincinnati, which later absorbed the earlier institutions.

In 1906, the University of Cincinnati created the first cooperative education program in the United States. For many years, it was the second largest municipal university in the country.

In 1977, UC joined the University System of Ohio. The University of Cincinnati is classified as a research university (with very high research activity) by the Carnegie Commission and is ranked as one of AmericaÕs top public research universities by the National Science Foundation.

In 2008, U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Cincinnati among the top 100 public universities in the nation and 15th among "Up-and-Coming" national universities.

UC is also the largest employer in the Cincinnati region.
