Overview

The University of Delaware, or UD, is a state-assisted, privately governed institution and the flagship university of the state. It was established in 1743 as the Free School, a small private academy.

The school's first class included three signers of the Declaration of Independence, one of whom also signed the U.S. Constitution.

Allison Academy relocated to Newark, Delaware, and was renamed Delaware College. It merged with a women's college in 1921 to become Delaware University.

With a main campus of 2039 acres in Newark, the school is the largest university in Delaware. It has satellite campuses in Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown and Lewes and facilities in London and Paris.

UD invented study abroad, with the first group traveling to Paris in 1923. Today the school offers programs in 35 countries on all seven continents and was honored with the Andrew Heiskell Award in Innovation in International Education.

The University of Delaware offers an active Greek Life. More than 15% undergraduate students of UD are affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. These are governed by the Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and National Panhellenic Conference.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, are graduates of the University of Delaware. The Vice President also received an honorary degree.

Other prominent alumni include Dave DeWalt, CEO, McAfee, Inc.; LizzAnn Sonders, Wall Street investment guru; Michael Barone, art photographer; Bob Greene, fitness guru; Vic Willis, Hall of Fame baseball player; Susan Stroman, Broadway director, choreographer; Jeff Pearlman, journalist; Peter Thejll, astrophysicist and climate expert. Oceanographer Robert Ballard, discoverer of the RMS Titanic, received an honorary degree.
