Overview

The University of Florida is a public, comprehensive, land-grant research university located in Gainseville, Florida. It is the state's oldest and largest university, one of only 17 public, land-grant universities nationally belonging to the Association of American Universities.

With more than 51,000 students, UF is now one of the five largest universities in the United states.

UF, as the school is also known, has a long history of established programs in international education, research and service.

The campus stretches across 2,000-acres and has more than 900 buildings. The Northeast corner of campus is listed as a Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1905, by legislative action, the college became a university and was moved to Gainesville. UF officially opened its doors to women in 1947.

U.S. News & World Report's 2009 rankings ranked UF 49th among all national universities.

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Southeastern Conference for major sports.
