Overview

The University of Georgia, or UGA, was founded in 1785 after it was incorporated by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It is the oldest public university in the United States and as such can be considered the birthplace of the American system of public higher education.

The university was actually established in 1801, when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. The University of Georgia is under the jurisdiction of the University System of Georgia. The campus, in Athens, Georgia, covers more than 600 acres.

The university's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications administers the Peabody Awards Program, often cited as the most prestigious award in electronic media.

The Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology was the first stand-alone academic school in the world devoted specifically to the study of the field.

Other distinctions are the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, established by UGA libraries--whose first members included Margaret Mitchell and Martin Luther King, Jr.--and the university's status as only one of 30 institutions in the nation to be designated a sea grant college.

The University of Georgia is divided into a number of academic divisions. These include:

  • College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
  • College of Education
  • College of Environment & Design
  • College of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • College of Pharmacy
  • College of Public Health

There are more than 20 fraternities and over 10 sororities at the University of Georgia. At UGA, more than 20% of the undergraduate student body participates in Greek Life.

UGA's famous alumni include actor Kim Basinger; Lewis Grizzard, humorist and columnist; Raymond Hughes, chorus master of the Metropolitan Opera; all four members of Pylon, a post-punk band; Ryan Seacrest, host of "American Idol" and radio programs; Kim black, Olympic swimmer; Fran Tarkenton, nine-time Pro Bowler as quarterback for the NFL Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants; Herschel Walker, retired NFL running back, Heisman Trophy winner and three-time football All-American; Phil Gramm, former U.S.Senator from Texas; and Charlayne Hunter-Gault, CNN international bureau chief and one of two first African-American students at the university.
