Overview

The University of Hawaii at Manoa, flagship campus of the University of Hawaii System, was established in 1907 as a land-grant college of mechanical arts and agriculture.

The institution gained university status and adopted its present name in 1920. It covers more 300 acres in the Manoa Valley, just outside downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, on the island of Oahu.

It was renamed the College of Hawaii in 1912 and is today one of only 13 institutions to be a land-, sea- and space-grant research institution. Classified by Carnegie Foundation as having "very high research activity," the University of Hawaii at Manoa is particularly known for its research in oceanography, astroomy, Pacific Islands and Asian area studies, among others.

There are several active student organizations in the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Some of these include Golden Key International Honour Society, Kappa Sigma, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Epsilon Theta, Alpha Gamma Delta, and Beta Beta Gamma. The undergraduate students are represented by the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii (ASUH).

The university, a member of the Western Athletics Conference, participates in 19 NCAA Division I sports.

Notable alumni include Neil Abercrombie and Mazi Hirono, U.S. Congressman; Daniel Inouye, U.S. Senator; Robert Ballard, oceanographer; Angela Perez Baraquio, Miss America 2001; Kennth P.
