The University of Houston–Downtown, also known as UH–Downtown or UHD, is a public, four-year university in Houston, Texas. It was established in 1974. UHD enrolls more than 12,000 students. The university is the fifteenth-largest university in Texas and the second-largest institution of the University of Houston System.
UHD offers both undergraduate and some graduate academic degree programs in diverse areas of study. The campus is located in five buildings. One of the buildings on the complex is the former Merchants and Manufacturers building, which is a historical landmark. UHD is organized into the following academic divisions:
UHD has an ethnic and diverse student body with one-third Hispanic, one-quarter African American, one-quarter white, and the remainder Asian American, Native American, and foreign students. UHD’s mascot is the Gator. It is home to several student clubs, organizations, fraternities, and sororities.
