Overview

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a coeducational public research university in the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana in east-central Illinois.

Established in 1867 and chartered as the Illinois Industrial University, the school opened its doors one year later. One of the 37 original public land-grant institutions created after Abraham Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862, the school was renamed the University of Illinois in 1885.

Also known as UIUC, or Illinois, the school has one of the largest public university collections in the world, with 1,5000,000 volumes in the library system as of 2009.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has 150 affiliated centers and institutes performing research for government agencies, industry and campus units.

In its 2010 America's Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report rated Illinois as the number 9 public university and the number 39 national university. New Mobility magazine ranks Illinois first among "disability-friendly colleges" in the United States.

In 2009, the Graduate School of Library and Information Science program was tied for first in the nation by U.S. News.

Among the university's cultural facilities are the Krannart Center for the Performing Arts, which includes four theaters and hosts student and professional performances and other events.

Famous alumni of UIUC include Rosalyn Yalow, Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine; Pulitzer Prize winners Carl Van Doren (biography) and George will (commentary); actors Barbara Bain and Jerry Orbach; Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee; Max Abramowitz, architect (United Nations, Avery Fisher Hall); Suzy Orman, financial advisor, author; James Brady, former White House press secretary, handgun control advocate; and Nancy Brinker, former U.S. Ambassaor, founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
