Overview

The University of Kansas is a public research university founded in 1865 by the citizens of Lawrence under a charter from the Kansas Legislature.

The main campus of the University of Kansas, also known as KU, occupies 1000 acres atop and around Mount Oread in Lawrence. The campus, distinguished by crimson roof lines against the skyline, can be seen for miles.

The KU Medical Center, which occupies several city blocks in Kansas City, is home to the academic schools of allied health, medicine and nursing, clinics, and research centers.

The Edwards Campus offers courses for adult students. The university also has a clinical campus of the School of Medicine in Wichita as well as educational and research facilities throughout Kansas.

Forbes Magazine named KU among only 10 as "IQ campuses" for trailblazing research. The university is also one of only 34 public universities in a select group of North American schools chosen on the basis of national significance in graduate studies and research.

The U.S. News & World Report of 2009 ranked KU 89th in its Best National Universities listing.
