The University of Kentucky was established by John Bowman in 1865. At that time, the university was known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky. UK received its present name in 1916. The university covers more than 700 acres of land in Lexington, Kentucky. UK is made up of the following schools and colleges:
