Overview

University of Louisiana at Lafayette, often referred to as UL Lafayette, is a coeducational, public, research university located in Lafayette, Louisiana, in the heart of Acadiana in the United States. It was established in 1900 with the name Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (SLII). It was renamed to Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI) in 1921. It was renamed again to the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) in 1960. Finally, in 1999, the University earned its present moniker.

UL Lafayette has several Greek-letter fraternities and sororities that date back to 1920. Some of the notable fraternities are Kappa Alpha, Phi Kappa Theta, Theta Xi, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Some important sororities are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sigma Gamma Rho, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta.

UL Lafayette's sports teams are called the Lousiana Ragin' Cajuns. The official mascot is a giant sized Cayenne pepper, fittingly christened Cayenne. The University sponsors various sports including baseball, basketball, football, softball, and water skiing.

School sports include football, basketball, baseball, and track. The school is in the Sun Belt Conference for major sports.
