Overview

The University of Louisville, also known as UofL, was established in 1798. It is one of the oldest universities chartered west of the Allegheny Mountains.

The university is a state-supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. It was a municipally supported public institution for many years before joining the university system in 1970.

UofL attracts students from more than 110 countries around the world. It has three campuses, including the 287-acre Belknap Campus, which houses seven of the university's colleges and schools.

The Health Sciences Center is in downtown Louisville's medical complex. The 243-acre Shelby Campus is in Eastern Jefferson County.

The school belongs to the Big East Conference. In early 2005, UofL's football and basketball teams were both in the top 10.

The University of Louisville has recognized more than 10 sororities and approximately 14 fraternities, including Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Sigma Kappa, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Alpha Omicron Pi.

UofL's famous alumni include Bob Edwards, former host of NPR's "Morning Edition" and now host of his own shows on XM Satellite Radio and PRI; Sam Gilliam, painter, specifically in color field and abstract art; Sue Grafton, author of American detective novels; Tony- and Pulitzer-winning playwright Marsha Norman; Static Major, singer, songwriter; David A. Jones, cofounder and former CEO of Humana Healthcare; Christopher Dodd, U.S. Senator from Connecticut; James Gilbert Baker, developer of the Baker-Schmidt telescope; and William Akers, who developed the SPF sun protection rating system.
