Overview
The University of Maine, also known as UMaine, is the flagship school of the University of Maine System. A land-sea grant university in Orono, it was originally established in 1862 as Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts by the Morrill Act--which was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln.
The institution, which enrolls more than 12,000 students, gained university status in 1897.
UMaine is classified as a research university (RU/H) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. It is organized into the following units:

Greek life is active on campus, making up as much as 12 percent of the student body. There are 15 fraternities, seven sororities and two Greek service organizations. The system is mostly community-service based.
UMaine's athletic teams are nicknamed the Black Bears.
Among the notable alumni of the University of Maine are novelist Manette Ansay; Stephen King, the "King of Horror" and literary icon; Donald Holder, Broadway Tony Award-winning light designer; Colby Chandler, CEO of Kodak; Bernard Lown, heart surgeon and peace activisit, winner of Nobel Peace Prize; Mark Sweeney, San Francisco Giants baseball player; Robert chandler, developer of "miracle rice" to increase production in Asia; Francis Crowe, builder of many dams, including Hoover; Gary F. Thorne, ESPN sports announcer; and Olympia Snowe, member of U.S. Congress.
